Marine Life Monday: The small, yet mighty, Flamingo Tongue Snail 🐌 The flamingo tongue is a small, brightly colored marine snail found in tropical waters. Its markings include bright orange and yellow spots with black rings. They are usually only about an inch long, and have a wavy “foot” (radula) beneath their body that is used to move and eat. They prefer to eat soft corals, including toxic sea fans which leads to the snails becoming toxic themselves. Typically bright things in nature stand out because they are dangerous, or want to be perceived as such. They do have larger predators (reef fish and lobsters) and are an important part of a healthy coral reef ecosystem. Plus, they are so colorful and fun to find while you are diving! On your next dive, notice that no two will have the same pattern on their shells. ……………………………………………………………………………….. Lunes de vida marina El pequeño, pero poderoso, Caracol de la engüeta del flamenco 🐌 La lengua de flamenco es un pequeño caracol marino de colores brillantes que se encuentra en aguas tropicales. Sus marcas incluyen manchas naranjas y amarillas brillantes con anillos negros. Por lo general, miden solo una pulgada de largo y tienen un "pie" ondulado (radula) debajo de su cuerpo que se usa para moverse y comer. Prefieren comer corales blandos, incluidos los abanicos de mar tóxicos, lo que hace que los caracoles se vuelvan tóxicos. Por lo general, las cosas brillantes en la naturaleza se destacan porque son peligrosas o quieren ser percibidas como tales. Marine Life Monday: Hawksbill Sea Turtle Hawksbill turtles get their name from the shape of their curved/pointed beaks, which resembles that of a bird of prey. They use this beak to feed on sponges and other invertebrates growing on coral reefs. Unlike other sea turtle species, which may cross entire ocean basins several times during their life, Hawksbills have home reefs where they spend much of their adult life. Unfortunately, there are many threats to the Hawksbills existence and they are listed and critically endangered. Naturally, only one or two of thousands of eggs will make it to adulthood. These turtles can be found in the coastal water of over 108 countries. *Each Monday, we will highlight and learn about one species found in the ocean. While it can be overwhelming to try to learn all of the species at once, anything is possible bit by bit. The hope is that once you know what lives under the surface, you will want to protect it and share it with others. * ………………………………………………………………………….. Lunes de Vida Marina: Tortuga Carey Las tortugas carey obtienen su nombre de la forma de sus picos curvos/puntiagudos, que se asemejan a los de un ave de rapiña. Usan este pico para alimentarse de esponjas y otros invertebrados que crecen en los arrecifes de coral. A diferencia de otras especies de tortugas marinas, que pueden cruzar cuencas oceánicas enteras varias veces durante su vida, las tortugas carey tienen arrecifes en los que pasan gran parte de su vida adulta. Desafortunadamente, existen muchas amenazas para la existencia de las tortugas carey y están en la lista y en peligro crítico. Naturalmente, solo uno o dos de los miles de huevos llegarán a la edad adulta. Estas tortugas se pueden encontrar en las aguas costeras de más de 108 países. *Cada lunes, destacaremos y aprenderemos sobre una especie que se encuentra en el océano. Si bien puede ser abrumador tratar de aprender todas las especies a la vez, todo es posible poco a poco.
